No. 7 - Las Hijas de Señora Phenomena Naturale - Bagyo-Bagyo

Bagyo-Bagyo. Permanent pigment ink on 12"x9" Bristol board. Double click to view details.
On the eve of Hurricane Ike, as I photographed the skies, I noticed a swarm of dragonflies flying in circles.
I included them on the drawing above along with other observations.

Clockwise from top left: Ulan and Monsoon, Tsunami, Lindol, Ba'ha', Buhawi, Bulkana

Bagyo-Bagyo brews typhoons in the Pacific Ocean and hurricanes in the Atlantic Ocean. She is responsible for washing away shore towns, blowing away rooftops, smashing glass windows, and sending oil tankers ashore in the middle of Mactan Island, once. She was responsible for erasing villages and subdivisions in the Gulf Coast map and submerging towns in the Philippines. She is high and mighty and when she comes she brings along her sister Buhawi and Ba'ha, but most often does their jobs herself. Her torrential rains plus the visitation of her sister Lindol and human mistakes of illegal logging and mining was responsible for the appearance of her sister Lutak' that buried Guinsaugon village in the town of Saint Bernard in Southern Leyte, burrying alive 1,126 people including an elementary school in session with 246 students and 7 teachers. Only one child and one adult survived.

Before her arrival, the skies cry out with gray ominous clouds and fiery splendor.

The skies before Hurricane Ike landfall, dedicated to my sisterfriend Arija:

Ces... Nature, in all its beauty, sometimes becomes angry and lets her wrath pour down upon us. Her strength is unwavering, shows no sympathy, and destroys everything and everyone in sight. As painful as it is, it's all part of the plan and somewhere along the line most of us feel her wrath in one way or another.
Your depiction of this mixture of beauty and destruction has been brilliant, Ces. In spite of the destructive end result, you have given us the beauty to look upon as well.
I have loved them all - but this one - Bagyo-Bagyo - is my favorite so far. It is beautiful, Ces.

You most certainly ARE making waves!

This sister certainly blows my rooftop off and smashes my windows. She is frighteningly powerful as much as she is beautiful. It's no wonder the other sisters follow her in her wake. Those clouds, Ces. How I love your clouds, both photographed and inked. Is that story true about the elementary school? Oh, please say it ain't so.

Ces Adorio said...

Yes, unfortunately, it is so, was so. Search "mudslide Southern Leyte 2006"

Heartbreaking- illegal logging and mining in the 70's under Marcos regime denuded the rainforests. Replacement coconut trees do not hold the soil in place and check erosion because of shallow root system. There was a typhoon and an earthquaKe. While torrential rains stopped' the ensuing earthquake gave way to the mudslide and burried the town. It was a school day.

Marie S said...

Wow such beauty and such devastation. She is of all, so far, the most dramatic and powerful, this Bagyo-Bagyo.

And the drawing is so beautiful it makes me cry.
I adore the octopus.
It seems maybe Bagyo-Bagyo would be kinder to humans if we tried to live with the eath and not against it.
Maybe that is the message these woman have been trying to give us.
At least there is something wonderful from all of these destroying forces... it is the beauty you have made from them.
Your photos of the skies before the storm remind of the sunsets we had during the fires, some of the most beautiful in southern california I have ever seen.
Love and hugs,

Bimbimbie said...

Tsup Tsup*!* The forces of Nature remind us just how feeble and insignificant we humans are. And at the rate of continued destruction of rainforests around the world by greedy feeble minds there will be more such landslides.

These are all true works of art. The drawings, the theme, the accompanying photos, the stories, all combine to make a stunning exhibit. I congratulate you and cry with you. This earth is a never ending source of misery and unbelievable beauty. Sometimes all at the same time.

Andrew Finnie said...

Well Ces, I am starting to worry about you. Your talent is very otherworldy, you know.

That's scary.

As far as your paintings, in a lot of them I see so many elements of many painters I admire.

Yet you have managed to distill the elements that make them admirable.

Hah, it's silly writing about such beautiful paintings.

It's best just to look at them and keep my mouth shut.

Sunny today in Oz. It's blowing offshore, the fish are singing and the birds are just sitting there, swaying in the breeze.

:)

Andrew Finnie said...

Ahh, I forgot to say. I have been to the dentist and he took that gold tooth out for me.

Poetic Artist said...

You have brought beauty into nature. Even in the anger of nature. Your work is so much wonderful detail.
I also love the painting at the top of your blog. It must be amazing to have so many wonderful sisters.

Dearest Ces, as beautiful as this gorgeous sister is, I hope I never see her in natura! Every spring, I make hurricane preparations and every year, I hope I will not need to use them... Your art is exquisite, your story heart breaking and your photos awesome!! Much love, Silke

Those pictures are pretty amazing... your art, as well as nature's...

Deborah said...

Worry worry. I think my live feed updater is not working properly...how did I miss this yesterday? Oh the mind of Ces that sees things the rest of us cannot even imagine. Oh, and another talent you have - you could have been a hair designer. Could you come do that to my hair? I could get extensions for you. The clouds, the drops from her hands, the waves, fish within the waves. Her Face. Exquisite. Oh Ces, the fire and passion within you is so great that it cannot be contained and spills out in squiggles and strokes of masterpieces. I must go look again.

The landlady. Her hair. Her scowl. Her fire! How you make me laugh.
**blows kisses** Deb

Silke Powers said...

Every time I think that the crazies have finally found my blog, I get the sneaky suspicion that its just my crazy sisterfriend, Ces. Please tell The Landlady that she is quite scary! What a scowl. And that hair!! I think she misses Milo... TSUP!

Marie S said...

Absolutely amazing!!!!!

audrey said...

Oh! Oh! Landlady, tell me you won't be upset when I get paint all over the floor and the walls while in a crazed state of creativity.... working on those large canvases leaning against the walls and throwing paint about makes for a messy state of affairs!! But you won't mind, right?? Because you are an artist and you understand and you will love all those colors of paint all over the floor. Right???
And, yes, I paid the rent!!!
hahahahahaha

Deborah said...

The exercise Nazi!!! I love it! Once again, your timing is impeccable. Brawny Man is out of town working and I was indulging in TV and nostalgia...running my hands along the microwave, the oak cabinets, remembering that I brought two babies home here, weeping on my stove, for some of the worst years of my life, and some of the best years of my life, have been in this house. And Lord knows, it is good. I love you Ces. I really do. Something in my soul leaped the day I met you. **happy smiles** Deb

Deborah said...

In response to Bella's question regarding the flexibility of your tongue...since my head no longer spins a 180, I can no longer lick my back. I used to be so much more bendy. And fun.

Hello, you know when I checked that picture I thought wow, Mita wears curlers. Then I realised it was Ces and then I realised that it was not Ces, but that famous movie star out of 'Lord of The Curlers - The invasion of the Land Ladies part 2)'

You know. I like to double translate so above translated into Indonesian is

Halo, Anda tahu ketika saya cek bahwa gambar saya pikir wow, Mita mengenakan rol rambutnya. Lalu aku sadar itu Ces dan kemudian aku menyadari bahwa tidak Ces, tapi bintang film terkenal dari "Lord of The pengeriting - Invasi bagian Ladies Tanah 2) '

But when I translate it back into anglais I get

'Hello, Anda knew when I the cheque that my picture thought wow, Mita put on the roll of his hair. Then I realised that Ces and afterwards I realised that not Ces, but the famous film star from "Lord of The pengeriting - the Invasion" of the "part of Ladies Tanah 2)"'

Now, "Invasion Of The Part of The Ladies?" I ask you.

thanks for the tips on my blog

bye :)

Inday, you are really very good in pointilism!!!! I wish Mamang were here to see all your work. I bet she will weave a story for each beautiful but strong willed lady you drew. Keep going!!! I can very well remember how I sat beside you in SILENCE to watch you draw.... because I couldn't!!!

Silke Powers said...

Oh, reading the comments was just what I needed this morning! I like your new fan, Sir Reginald Farthead! He sounds learned and distinguished... Where is the Landlady? She scared me a little, but now I sort of miss her... TSUP! Silke

Ces Adorio said...

Hello Inday, thank you for visiting and commenting. Ahh, those were the times. Now about you watching me in silence, how many times did I sit beside you and watch you read and study while we were in college because I would always fall asleep once I started reading. You were very quiet and then one day you just took out this huge tapestry that you cross stitched --- OMG! Is that how you practiced your suturing skills? Anyway, you stitch so well just like a plastic surgeon. :)

Hey Nasi..... I happen to like his ball...lol! Maybe you shouldn't be leaving your opinion on my post while I try to rehabilitate the little bugger. His last home was a bad influence on him.

Ces Adorio said...

Oh yeah? A new pin to deflate the black ball?

Manon said...

Fried Dumpling or is it Dumplings? No... the pin is for his shirt to honor the Queen of the Dumpling or is it the Belle of Texas? Nope I think it's the Belle of the Ball!

Ces Adorio said...

What does the pin say? "Take me back to Ces?"

Manon said...

Nothing like that....lol! You'll see!! lol

If you use them all up, what will the rest of us do?
