Being born to wise parents and wise sisters and brothers does not guarantee one wisdom. I struggle with this. I am forever catching up.

Chartreuse and Scarlet can't hold up a carafe to their sister Pearl Grey when it comes to dreams. In fact it is believed Pearl Grey sleeps just to dream. Pearl Grey, Chartreuse and Scarlet are Fiesta dish colors. Perl Grey and Chartreuse are retired. Scarlet is still an active color.

The pictures I painted for Pearl Grey's background are real paintings. The nurse painting is one of two paintings I did from a study (Diablo de Uteri) I did many years ago (above left). The paintings like my life are interrelated, interconnected inside out, outside in, round and round.Today is both a day of joy and poignant remembrances. Today my Father died ten years ago. He passed away on the day of his first child's birthday, my eldest sister. I used to miss him a lot and I cried for a couple of years when I remember him but I realized he lives in me and so I stopped crying and started celebrating. Thank you Tatay, for everything and for being my father. My eldest sister was very close to my parents when we were growing up. She grew up being a pseudo parent and if I have been disrespectful, defiant or unkind to any of my sisters or brothers all of whom were older except my younger sister, I cannot ever remember being so to my eldest sister. I looked up to her when I was a child, literally and figuratively. Hahaha! Seriously, I was smitten with her. She walked with grace with her head held up and she spoke English with a beautiful accent and diction.
I had a crush on my own sister. Hahahaha! She is also the only sister who gave me a lot of slack and always intervened on my behalf to save me from the dungeon, the gauntlet and the firing squad when every entreaty failed and I made everybody's lives miserable by my antics and bad behaviour. She explained to my Mother that "Ces is different, maybe we should experiment with her. She does not respond to traditional child rearing and cultural trends." BAM! I got a pass. Not really.
After my grade school years, my sister went on to become a professor, author and authority in Special Education. She was a Fulbright scholar and professor in the U.S. and is an author of several books on Special Education. After she retired from her professorial job, she continues to teach and manage a school for disabled children.
Oh my, my sister is truly great and wonderful. She makes accomplishments , achievements and honors mere tasks. Why my brothers and sisters are I achieved academic success is because of her guidance and inspiration. Every friend of mine who I leave in my sister's company returns in awe not because she is wonderful and awesome in many ways but because she is very unassuming, humble, compassionate and extremely kind and gentle. I make it my prerogative to beam with pride., of course. This morning I received an email from her and she wrote
"Dear Ces, your blog is sooo good, I do not miss reading it. I think, no, I'm certain, I have a gifted sister. We have not seen you for a long time but your blog, with our pictures sometimes, makes distance less an enemy. Don't you sleep?"
Hah! There you go! I think so much of myself sometimes and my sister knows how to make everything real. My sisters are sometimes distraught that most of our family photos do not have my elder brother who studied at a university in another island or was always away for work. My eldest sister loves him very much. He is her favorite because they shared so much during their childhood including the Japanese occupation (he was a baby and she was a toddler). The first big painting I did, above, (36"x48" is a depiction of my mother, my eldest sister and brother). Here's a picture of our two brothers for you Inday.

Happy Birthday! I love you. You can ask for anything and have anything you want from me.

What a beautiful, in depth, touching post Ces! I love the painting names coming from Fiesta colors....which I should--really SHOULD know as we ate off it every day when I was growing up. (and foolish me,I hated it and sold it all....OUCH!!!)
ReplyDeleteYou have a wonderful family---you are blessed and double for having a sister that saw right through to your heart!
XXOO!!
Anne
Aah thank you Anne. I don't deserve all my blessings. I think the angels played favorites on me when they showered me with my family and friends including my blog friends and sisterfriends. I keep screwing up but eventually I get it right! Just get new Fiesta dishes. The active colors are beautiful. I love that they are made in the USA.
ReplyDeleteOh! I forgot. As soon as I am done cooking for the superbowl party, I am painting Rose. Rose is a retired color.
ReplyDeleteThis is such a cool image! Her outfit reminds me of Picasso. I love the color palette. It is soothing. And the umbrella is a wonderful addition. One never knows when it will rain. May I rub her head? Some of my favorite people were baldies, you know.
ReplyDeleteI was listening to a radio station a few days ago, and the DJ was saying how more women prefer fatties over baldies. But all the CA women who called in said they preferred baldies over fatties.
Happy Birthday to an incredible sister, who was most wise and gentle and who helped raise you to be who you are. I love seeing pictures of you and your siblings, and this is a true treat to see your older brother as well.
So what are you cooking up, dear Ces? Chicken wings and pigs in blankets and dips and chili? Or is it pansit and lobster and crabs?
Oh my dearest sisterfriend. You have sooooo touched my heart with this wonderful and very moving post. you are something else Ms. Ces. You really are. You to have been blessed with such wonderful people to love you be around you. The painting is sooooooo amazing! YOU are Amazing. You always have something up your sleeve lady. Excellent!
ReplyDeletehugs

This is such a beautiful post, Ces, and had so much to read and look at that I had to come back after making delicious dinner! We are grilling tonight - the weather is good for a change! I love all the paintings and also your loving tribute to your dad and your sister! You are so lucky in your family and I love that you know it!! Love, Silke
ReplyDeleteP.S. I can relate to Pearl Grey - I sometimes just take a nap so I can dream. I have the most awesome dreams - my own movie theater!!
Ahhhh Ces!!! I have no words for your beautiful post and I'm in total awe of this painting! WOW, WOW, WOW!!! She is absolutely amazing! Bravo!!
ReplyDeleteHappy birthday to your sister and I know your a little sad remembering your dad. My heart is with you, my twin sisterfriend.

ReplyDeleteFirst, I have only looked and looked at this painting and must say BRILLIANT! I love her dancer's stance, neck of a dancer, the paintings within the painting, the floor, her uni-tard, Fiesta ware...Glorious. Oooo is that a tear in her uni-tard? I am telling you Ces, they will be teaching on your art one day...art of The Masters. You MUST MUST MUST be in a show. Your work touches my very soul. ♥ Deb
ReplyDeleteAh, now for the words...yes, the sister and baby brother who hid in the field with Mama that night of terror...I have goosebumps right now remembering your writing of it. Ces, you are such a gift and a delight to know and love. "Ces is different, maybe we should experiment with her. She does not respond to traditional child rearing and cultural trends." For that statement, how I love this sister of yours. That was my boy and my thoughts on him growing up. If only She had been his teacher...but then, the pain he suffered has made him into a good man. I love you dearest Ces, and I love your family. Would you please consider adopting this poor sisterless inner child? **kisskiss** Deb
ReplyDeleteOoh, brilliant work, Ces. I just love coming here because I feel such a warmth from your writing and for the huge amount of love that you exude for your family...it's wonderful. Love that these paintings are Fiesta colors!! I'm so glad your eldest sister rescued you from that scary turpentine accident.
ReplyDeleteYOU, my dear, are so kind..you don't have to look at my little paintings for expertise on eyes..for your lovely women have such character and depth. What I do is sketch in pencil, just those little upturned arcs, and add a little "eyelid" line, have the little eyes point downward, and you get a sad little eye. I notice that I'm drawn to painting eyes in a sad way...wonder what that says, huh?!
Anyhoo..it is always wonderful to visit you...have a great week ahead, Ces!! And how neat to see your brothers in this post too. : ) What a kind lil' sister you are to your eldest.
Thank you all for reading this long post. I know your time is precious so I appreciate you spending valuable time reading.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely baldies over fatties, Bella, although some fatties are also baldies. No pigs on sleeping bags, just pansit, egg rolls and the guys took care of all the meat. Yes, it is always good to have an umbrella handy. Now you gave me an idea.
Vaness, sweet sisterfriend, thank you. I need to check those sleeves of mine. Hahahah!
Oh Silke, I would like to hear some of your dreams. I too dream long dreams like chapter dreams and I wake up exhausted. I illustrate some of my dreams, I just don't tell which ones are the dreams and which ones are the imagination. Thank you for reading.
Thank you Manon. That means a lot to me coming from you especially after you posted those lips, I think they are the most beautiful I have seen.I need to know what color lipstick yo apply of your women! :)
Deborah thank you. Ah no it's not torn. It's the crease and I need to share a better image. AND YES! But I already adopted you a long time ago!
Oh Shirley, thank you. Say Hi to MArilyn for me. Hehe! I loved talking about Fiesta with her. Thank you for the explanantion. I would like for you to show me how with just an eye illustration, please. Thank you.
Thank you,
Ces, aka Baldie

Diana
You have a wonderful family Ces, and this is such a touching tribute. I am in awe of your painting!Such talent!
ReplyDeleteCes, the more we learn about you, the more wonderful you become, as a person and an artist. Thanks for sharing your art and your life stories.
ReplyDeleteBest,
Glen
Good morning, dear sisterfriend!! How are you this morning?! We are finally expecting some sunshine here before more rain tomorrow... We might just float away one of these days, we've had so much rain! I'm going to spend my morning with hands in the dirt, repotting my house plants. I think I'm getting ready for Spring!! Wishing you a most wonderful Monday! Love, Silke
ReplyDeleteAnd this first painting of your oldest sister completed in one morning, Ces? Wow.
ReplyDeleteYour sister is right to ask, do you never sleep?
It is a treat to read about your large and cheerful family, such a contrast in someways to my own, but then there are always happy moments in most families and ours- yours and mine - are not exceptions.
My father died on the day that his first born daughter died, not on her birthday but on her death day. Such anniversaries are significant.
Who's this baldie on my blog? lol!! Morning Ces!! Love your new profile pic!
ReplyDeleteDiana, welcome back and thanks for sharing your fun vacation. Oh no! Your dolls are not silly, if they are, then my paintings and drawings are silly too.
ReplyDeleteThank you Pam. I am grateful and happy.
Glen, you are so sweet! It's nice to get to know you too.
Elisabeth, no I did not. I think I painted it for at least a day or two. I do with most paintings, finish the general concept in a day or two but hen it takes me a while to refine them because I have to wait for the oils to dry.
Manon, You like my bald head? It is smooth, want to rub it? Heheh.
Hi Ces! Oh, I love your big sister, too. She was the perfect person for someone like you to have in her life growing up. You are completely gifted, and she knew that. I am smiling because your sister knew exactly how to 'handle' you. What a lovely person, to look after you the way she did (and let you share her room! My sister would have happily put me out in the snow - haha!). When I read about your family, and your childhood, I have to admit to being envious. But mostly, I am just happy for you, that you and your sibs are close the way you are. I know your parents are smiling, too. xoxoxo Pam
ReplyDeleteOh Ces, you had me going...I read the email, not the comment on the blog and was thinking WHO is baldie? yet she speaks as if we are friends ... thanks for the morning giggle! Dee an I have upped our walking route to 3.5 miles in preparation for doing a
ReplyDelete5K in two weeks. Yard Boy will need to do the photog! Happy Monday, my Cesalicious. **kisskiss** Deb
Oh yes you should have made a bet! Dee is trying to come up with a bet with Yard Boy so she can win a free car detail from him!
ReplyDeleteHa ha ha!!! Baldie!!!
ReplyDeleteThank you so very very much for stopping by! Yay! I am trying to take care of both of us an so far I achieved subscribing to a prenatal LiveJournal community. I also worry about my cat. People keep scaring me that toxoplasmotose (or something like that) can be gotten from a cat.
I want to do blood test to check that.
I also worry that I can't draw these days! i am just so not into drawing! I hope this stage will pass.
xoxo.
Fatso, who is also Dusik :)
OMG, Ces, you always make me laugh! I read the e-mail I got with your comment and thought Who is this Baldie who writes as though we know each other. But no matter, I love her sense of humor... I should have known it was you!! For being called Baldie you have the most beautiful head of hair... I'd love to see your pastel paintings! Maybe you'll find them or they'll find you again... Love, SIlke
ReplyDeleteWonderful paintings. Pearl Grey is fantastic.
ReplyDeleteThanx, Ces! I will try my best asking for help. I don't overwhelm myself with home tasks, though. I do some cooking and some cleaning, but I used to do more before. Husband doesn't seem to mind. But this is only a start, maybe he will in the future! He he
ReplyDeleteLittle Tigger! that's so cute, and that's for sure!
nice article. I would love to follow you on twitter. By the way, did any one hear that some chinese hacker had hacked twitter yesterday again.
ReplyDeleteYou are so lucky to have a older sister to protect and tell every one that you are different and that you needed to be handled differently. I think that is where you get your strength from.
ReplyDeleteBless your older sister and the grace of love that she gave you. You can go forth in the world with out doubt, well most of the time and that is a blessing.
She also made it ok to be different, it wasn't a problem child it was beautiful soul that needed a new and different kind of way to be nurtured.
She encouraged the flower to bloom in the flowers own way, not the mass way.
I think I have a crush on her too.
Happy Birthday to your brilliant sister and Joyful wanderings to your father.
Love and hugs sister friend
Hey Ces..... ya..... you are trees and acorns and I guess I am hearts and women.....lol!
ReplyDeletePam thank you! I hope you are joking about being put out in the snow especially with the snow you are having right now!
ReplyDeleteDeborah, of course you know Baldie! Hahahah! The Viking was smart. He insisted I was wrong but knew I was right so that is why he did not make a bet because I did say "I bet you..."
Dusik! I am so happy for you. Congratulations and take care sweetie!
Marie, you are going to make my sister smile and happy. Thank you!
Oh yes! Is there anybody else who has theose cornered Manon?
Thank you Mike.
BAHAHAHAHAHA. One word. Electrolysis.
ReplyDeleteLove you, my hirsute heroine.
Ces thank you for sharing this story about a family built with love. Your art has my mind reaching for the brightest colors of the rainbows...much like the Fiesta dishes you love. They are actually made here in Ohio. Imagine and Live in Peace, Mary Helen Fernandez Stewart
ReplyDeleteLove this work. I sent your link to a painter friend of mine who would benefit so much by checking this out - hopefully he will look!
ReplyDeleteThe forms in your paintings have a hint of the early period of Picasso.
ReplyDeleteGlad I discovered you on Maria's blog(Vienna! Happy Valentine's day!)
this is really beautiful! i love the patterns and colors, and also the diablo del utero...
ReplyDeleteit sounds like you have a beautiful family!
