The Secret Society Of Oaks - The Arija Award

The Arija Award
"Ancient as time, favourite tree: the oak, animal: the wolf, flower: Anemone hepatica, place: a forest near water. Bird: too numerous to name, camera permanently grafted to hand, lover of light, nature, the sea, mountains, deserts, all forests, musing on the essence of being, loving all things great and small, caring for this wonderful planet of ours. "arija

A wise and and much beloved woman taught me something indirectly through her actions. Having grown up in a country ravaged by wars, governed by a dictator who later fled in the cover of darkness, of thieving and corrupt politicians; a place hammered by typhoons, washed up by floods and battered by droughts, there were times when we had nothing but just enough to quiet our borborygmi. Yet the wise and much beloved woman told us to share what very little we had with those who had none. Whoever came to our home to ask for something never left empty handed. She made me believe that by sharing the very little of what's left, it will multiply. Try telling that to a six year old, it will pass over her head like a flying omega.
.
It was not until years later when I realized what she meant and see for myself the product of her philosophical multiplication function.
.
My Mother was also the first woman I knew who practiced conservation without the bleeding heart-liberal mumbo-jumbo that I now hear with the present green movement whose leaders preach and chastise our lives while they jet off to lunch and highly paid lectures, or power their mansions with air-conditioning enough to cool a hospital building and then invest in companies to advance their financial portfolio rather than truly preserving Earth. She lived a life of great sense and meaning and never once did I ever hear her lecture, proclaimed herself holier-than-thou. She taught by example and made the preservation of our environment a basic function much like eating or bathing.
.
I did not think I will ever find another woman like my mother until I met Arija. They went through wars, natural and man-made disasters yet arose from the ashes and remnants with great dignity and honor. They share a progressive view anchored in timeless wisdom, both of great intellect and compassion.
.
I am blessed to call Arija my sisterfriend and it is my great honor to design this award to recognize her: A thinking, seeing, feeling, loving person who celebrates life every day. She is an artist, a photographer, a fascinating woman with great sense of humor, wise and thoughtful blogger and a loving and caring friend.
.
Bella Sinclair had this to say about Arija: "I was reading just a little bit about oaks yesterday. Such a strong wood that it is prized for its strength and density. It refused to be felled for centuries (until the invention of iron tools). That, truly, is Arija, she who offers support and shade, who twinkles in the sunshine and sways with the breeze, and who refuses to be felled."
.
I am delighted to share this award with my favorite bloggers:

The Deborah Award

.

Friendship isn't about who you have known the longest,
but who came and never left your side.

I have this peculiar habit of comparing people to trees. Growing up I familiarized myself with the characteristics of trees and how much contribution they make to the planet. Like people there are trees who are majestic, regal, strong and beautiful. There are also trees that are trashy, are good for a number of years and then it's better to chop them down. So it was with naive and childlike belief that when we moved out of the city into the suburbs I felt so rich for my Mother planted so many trees and they were beautiful, bountiful and strong trees. I am wrong to think I was naive. It was not naive after all, of me to compare people to trees and to consider trees as treasures.
.
In the blogs there are a few awards that I am very proud to have created or collaborated with their creation but mostly I felt it was a great honor and privilege to have done so. Two of these awards are symbolized by trees, namely, the oak tree. The Renee Award which Bella Sinclair and I created for phenomenal woman Renee, symbolized by the acorn and then there is the Quercus lobata, majestic and largest of western oaks which I used for The Bella Sinclair Award for sisterhood and friendship.
.
I have achieved "blog nirvana", a term coined by Bella where I blog for mere pleasure and without pressure and have achieved my goals. Words mean a lot to me therefore I am careful with my attributions. I have, since I coined the term "sisterfriend" on Blog Sister Day which coincides with "No Housekeeping Day", carefully addressed or think of only seven bloggers as sisterfriends, even though I have blogged for three years.
.
So today I am planting another tree. The Quercus shumardii or Shumard Oak. It is a handsome large tree with straight axis and broad, rounded open crown. It withstands strong hurricane winds, extreme heat, is tall and straight and just plain beautiful. It fits it's honoree, my dearest sisterfriend Deborah, poet, friend, not just a mother but a soldier's mother too. Oh, the sleepless nights, the anxiety and worries, yet she is perpetually pleasant and cheerful, kind and gentle, diplomatic and tactful. She exudes courage, hope and faith. To her son Pfc. Ryan and his fellow soldiers: I am grateful to you for making it possible for me to blog freely, sleep soundly and speak openly. Thank you! I stand by your mother and hold her hand as she awaits your safe return home.
.
Deborah, the honor is mine. You have enriched my life in such a short period of time. You inspire me and encourage me. Thank you very much!
.
I have more trees to plant but rest assured those who have virtual trees and acorns planted and distributed in their honor have one common virtue, they are loyal friends regardless of race, creed, political affiliations and geography. Here, I honor womanhood and friendship and there is nothing more wondrous a blessing for anyone than for a friend who came and never left your side. Someone like Deborah.
.
You have those friends, please share this award with them. For starters I would like to give this award to:
.
and my dearest Deborah!
.
Thank you all for making my blog experience meaningful and fun! Please congratulate Deborah and share the award with your circle of wonderful, loving and loyal friends!

The Bella Sinclair Award

Within the four corners of my desk is a small rectangular piece of machine, fragile and dependent on unseen electrical currents and programs. It yields to the power of Zeus when he throws extreme thunderbolts and it answers to an even higher power, our seven-month old family pet, Daisy. It is something that connected me everyday to someone very dear in Tokyo and connects me now to another in New Jersey; to Savannah; to
Escondido; to Winnipeg; to Sydney and Vienna. Most of these connections are with women who share the English language and an interest in art. I blog.
.
In the blogs, I receive enormous satisfaction when I see Arija's blazing sunrises and sunsets and read her prose and poetry; when I read Renee's cancer treatment journal where she struggles and perseveres and then inspires; when Manon shares the painting of her women with intense gazes and the bucket of gesso she spilled on her studio floor; when Silke shares her new painting; when I see Linda furiously paint with her finger; when I see BT's garden; when I see Aimee's fascinating word art; and read of Deborah being so proud of Pfc Ryan, understandably so; and smile at Baino’s
intense dissertations; when I see Marie’s incredible clay sculptures and Diana Evan’s colorful cupcakes; when Bimbimbie gazes at the vaticinating moon and then there's Bella Sinclair, Bella whose art exudes joy and mirth that one cannot deny that life is beautiful! If I had no tangible reason to blog before, I do now.
.
Bella Sinclair is on leave from blogging while she resettles to her new home after a most anticipated return to the US from Japan, only to be punctuated by the tragic and sudden loss of her husband, days before their return flight. Her friends in blogworld wish her and her daughters the best and send them prayers for the healing of their pain and sorrow which is paramount. If one wants to find evidence of a sisterhood in the blogs, just visit Bella's blog.
I designed this award to celebrate art in the blogs and to honor the value of friendship, sisterhood, sharing and caring. It is to be awarded to the gifted, accomplished, eloquent and talented blogger whose friendship and influence inspire us to do our best. That I named it after Bella Sinclair is because she epitomizes all of these things. She is an inspiration to many of us.

.

I have chosen to symbolize this award with the Quercus lobata or Valley Oak. It is a simple and unadorned award but heavy on meaning. The Valley Oak is a large handsome tree with a stout and sturdy trunk and widely spreading branches that form a broad open crown. It can reach up to a height of 100 feet and a diameter of 4 feet, sometimes much greater. It is the largest of the western deciduous oaks and is a handsome and graceful shade tree.

Like the spread and beauty of the Valley Oak, Bella Sinclair is an extremely gifted and talented artist who is much beloved. Her art reveals enormous creativity, skill and artistry and oozes with life and joy. As a blogger, her demeanor is jovial and unassuming, her comments filled with amity. She is thoughtful, eloquent, lighthearted, sensitive, serious and funny. She is a mental ninja, an accomplished intellectual and professional, an academe before she concentrated on taking care of her epsilons and now a widely admired artist. In the blogs she is supportive and caring. She is a source of inspiration to many and most especially to me.
I hope that when Bella returns, this award would have already circulated in the blogs. It is my honor to give this award to the first recipients who I hope will find the same pleasure as I have in spreading its crown, giving shade and the comfort of friendship and caring and of sisterhood by sharing this award with their blog-friends and sisters!.

and most of all may Bella find her way here someday when she is ready to return and accept this award:
