One Day, Part II: Oh Damn!

Ballpoint Pen on Moleskine Ruled Notebook
Isabella did not see it coming. Before she could react he punched her on her left eye. She feared the worst. She struggled.
The mugger got more than Isabella's necklace.
The mouse got the cheese.
The cat got the mouse.
Isabella lost her eyesight for two weeks. She lost not just her necklace. For the first time in her life she really knew what hatred felt like.
She gained unwanted and surprising lessons in life. Young Isabella, egalitarian, always thought the best of people, no more. Her life was forever changed.
"Oh!"

Nice to have you back.
Being mugged seems to be a fact of life these days.
I have never been mugged with success before.
They tried to mug me some 20 years ago, when I was in Anaheim. 3 of them. One of them drew a knife.
I was young and stupid.
A time when I was trainig about 15 hours of judo per week and 4 hours of karate.
All 3 hit the ground in a hard way.
I walked away.
My wife shouted at me that I was a stupid idiot.
She was right.

Pieterbie, no I am glad you did a judo on them. I wish I had a weapon. I would have loved to use it. Muggers are cowards. Every time there is a referrendum for more prison facilities for criminals, I always vote YES!!!

Pieterbie, you mean Anaheim in the US?

Glad to see you posting again. Isabella's life is taking a dark turn - I'll be interested to see how she recovers. Love the drawings!

It's strange but as soon as I started reading this it brought up the memory of my being mugged about 30 years ago. I never ever think about it anymore but it was one of those occasions in life that seems like a dream or a movie that you watched a very long time ago and then you shut the door, lock it and throw away the key because you never really want to open that door. This is how Isabella must feel. For a year I couldn't bear to have anybody stand behind me. A strange drug addled woman came behind me when I was 19, I was standing at a crosswalk waiting for the light to turn green and she hit me on the back of the neck so hard that I fell instantly to the ground. She kicked me in the face and arm and screamed at me. I had my wallet in my hand and thought she wanted my money but she thought I was someone she knew and she was furious with me. I ran and ran back to the shop I worked and burst into tears. A man saw the whole thing and found me and called the police. A detective came and told me to not press charges because she would probably wait for me in the dark in the parking lot. It was a life changing event for a while but not anymore. As it is now a very distant memory. You captured it perfectly with your art and words.

Oh Val, how could that detective think not to press charges? It is as if he was saying not to incite that crazy woman? I am sorry to have stirred such a memory. I am not going to expound on this incident but I used to expect the best from humans.

Strong story and drawings!

Not at all Ces! It actually did not really stir anything bad. It's more as if I look at that young girl and feel bad that happened to her. Wrong place wrong time. But I think that this woman who hurt me must have really been hurting, she was found in the blood bank donating for money so she was a desperate junkie.

Poor Isabella, but it comes to us all ... that sad loss of innocence. Love the drawings ... do you write to the images, or draw the pictures to the story?

Ces Adorio said...

Sidney, thank you.

Val, I know exactly what you mean!

Bibi, indeed a sad loss of innocence. Some of life's lessons are painful. As for Isabella, I draw her first sometimes especially if I am concentrating on her shoes and wardrobe, the vain Isabella. Most times I draw her to a story and she has many stories.

CESSSSS - yipeeeeee! you're back!

You're sketches and your stories are so creative, I love it.

KJ is a wise woman and she is 100% correct when she said - you rock!!!

Maria, thanks for the warm welcome and thanks again; as for KJ all I can say is :-) since I am recupperating from vacation and I still have laundry to do!

Hello Ces, I see that you are writing a complete story with beautiful drawings. I have to read and look good at this first and then I'll be back (like Schwarzenegger ;-) Greetings from the Netherlands, where it is cold and rainy now. Brrrr..let's go back to Malta!

Ces Adorio said...

Hello Weineke, Warm and sunny Malta sounds good over a cold and rainy place :-) Do "come back with(out) weapons" as my kids used to imitate Aahnold.

Sad stories are good too. And I love the pictures.

1. i like the drawings very much, esp. the details about the cheese, the mouse and the cat and the parallel with what happened to Isabella.
2. Very shocking that this happened to isabella, one does not feel safe anymore after a robbery. What is esp. shocking is the violence. Some weeks ago a friend of my daughter was robbed and beaten up, just on the way to the univ. Now how much can a young student have in the wallet that is worth robbing ? and why is it necesarry to beat her and kick her ?? And last but not least, why can this kind of agression not be punished more ?
Times do not seem to change.

Cherry, please do. I miss your doses of humor, wit and fine writing.

Gautami, thanks. I think sad stories are good too.

Hildegarde, oh my. I am with you. It is different when muggers and robbers just steal and take away things. Why they have to use violence and inflict physical injuries on top of mental and psychological harm is unforgivable.

My word!! We all must be aware of our surroundings, never knowing what is lurking about.

Poor Isabella, that was a nasty happening but I think she is strong and will use this experience in her daily life to her advantage. I sure hope they find the rotten person that did this to her.

The pictures are smashing! The details are marvelous. You didn't leave out anything, not even a mouse. :>

Babe, thank you so much. The mouse! I was drawing thse pictures one day and I saw a not about extermination so I thought about rodents and the mouse. Silly of me.
