Ceratotherium simum (White Rhinoceros)

Ah see, back already. That did not take long. Here is something I drew last month. I am drawing an elephant herd this week. I would like to try a detailed rhinoceros drawing next. Did you know that a white rhinoceros is not white? The name white rhinoceros comes from the Afrikaan, a West Germanic language, word "weit" which refers to their "wide" muzzle.  It is also known as the square-lipped rhino. It is the second largest mammal and has almost no hair. Above drawing, of Ceratotherium simum, is with pigment and India ink on Paris Paper. Certotherium simum stands 5 to 6 feet and weighs 3,080 to 7,920 pounds.

Oh my goodness!!! It has been so long since I blogged from my own personal computer, over a month!!!. Actually my friends think mine is not a real computer, it is just an Apple. Pfft. Here is a sneak peek of a completed pen and ink drawing while I figure out how to scan it because the new Mavericks OS just rendered the scanner part of my multi-functional printer obsolete, but allows the printer to work. Grrrr. Darn right, it is not a real computer. Sigh.

Very Bad Medicine

My MacBook Pro is being serviced. I have been without it since February 14th. Long story. Guess from which Mac I am publishing this post? Hahaha! This is the only free thing I get to do at Apple. For everything else, I have to pay. Whew. It is a blessing and a curse to be without your own computer. Sorry, they have a fancy track pad, I do not know how to manipulate it to align this paragraph. If you see any typographical error just let me know and I will correct it when I have my book back. Have a great day!

Killing For Longevity

This image may be confusing to those who may not be aware that in rescuing rhinos from poachers, they are sometimes transported by helicopters in such manner. Cranes are a symbol of longevity in China, Vietnam, Japan and Korea. Turtles are also symbols of longevity, especially in Thailand. Incidentally, the firefly is a symbol of impermanence.

Cranes, as a symbol of longevity is hypocritical and meaningless at best if the the people of those cultures behave like ravenous wolves in their quest for longevity and economic profit; pillaging the earth and driving animals to extinction because of their horns, scales or tusks.  Such behavior is against the presets of life and human decency.

RHINOS HAVE NO VOICES

Wise Ones: So let us unite in our belief and pursuit of longevity. That which enables us to achieve such by ingesting powdered rhino horns. We shall consume vast amounts so that we may empower ourselves with the virtue. Yes, we shall hunt and kill, maim and torture the rhino in Africa, Java, Sumatra and Indonesia for we have already rendered it extinct in Vietnam. So what if the rhino becomes extinct? It is part of the cycle of life and we have the means to pay the ignorant hungry guardians of such beasts; to satiate our greed for longevity beyond and above all means.

Rhino horns grow back, don't they? They will grow back after we hack off their faces, just like humans when their faces and skulls are hacked and scalped."

What do you mean they don't grow back? You mean, they die?

Remember reading in history how the people burned women at the stake because they were accused of witchcraft? People were scared of the power of those women so they burned them alive. That lasted awhile. Who was it among the wise and brave ones who wanted to rid society of witches who said "You know, if we burned every witch, we might run out of women."

BECAUSE THEY ARE BEING SILENCED FOREVER!

The descendant of every man and woman who ingests rhino horn should wear these images of killed and maimed rhinos as their medallions. The hope for a renaissance lies in the strength and ability of humans to eradicate ignorance and superstition; to rise above greed and selfishness; that we lead a life cognizant of the welfare of every living matter. We must protect those whose welfare and well being have been entrusted to us in the circle of life. The idea of living well has nothing to do with being well off. Avoid buying products from nations and people who rape and pillage the earth. They may sell cheap stuff, that is because they have no regard for the production of merchandise, even their own people are abused through inhumane labor practices.

Ceratotherium simum

White rhinoceros, Ceratotherium simum. Micro pigment and India ink on 19"x 24" Bristol Board. 

I am unable to scan this oversized drawing because my scanner is limited to 9"x12" images. It took so long to finish this drawing, about two weeks; not that I was impatient but I was just getting weary. Actually I used this drawing project to inspire me to get my work done so I can go home and draw. I carried this drawing back and forth to work in my oversized 20"x26" folio bag. I have become an expert in maneuvering doors. However, one day, I was carrying so many bags; my folio, computer bag, purse, lunch bag and coffee cup. I was also exhausted after a very long workday. I dropped my phone on the parking lot, without my knowledge. An honest person later found it, emailed me and left a voice mail on my work phone. Thank you!!! The photo on the far left is my phone with very own phone case that I received in the mail today from Society 6. :)
