Da Internet

I am just quoting, you know. I did not mean to post today but I was surfing the web and found this article.

"British scientists found that the longer people spent online, the less likely they were to be happy." Are you happy?

"A small group of the worst affected individuals were both depressed and addicted." Aaaaack! Read the article here:

Internet surfers caught in a web of depression

"But it was not clear whether using the internet causes mental health problems, or whether people with mental health problems are drawn to the internet."

What is your mental health problem, hmn? I think they hit the nail on the head! I need to consult with my psychologist. Does this include Facebook, Twitter, online dating, online shopping, Blackberry, chat, online gaming, message boards - AAAAAAAHHHH! I am going for a long walk!!!

  2. Aah Diana we all have artsandcraftsaholic issues. Now this internet-depression study is something else.I tend to think that they feed off each other. I just wanted to post my baldy photo so I needed a post.

  3. Well I'm certainly not depressed, neither are my internet friends. In fact, if I come across a 'needy' blog, I'm less likely to bother visiting again. I use it as an outlet to be cheery! I'm off for a walk too!

  4. Oh my mental illnesses are many....I'm nuts for my blog-friends, and am sure there is no cure for that.
I am addicted to my artwork, and the work of *some others*---and y'all know who you are.
I get a little paranoid when I have not heard from my friends via e-mail.
I laugh at machines....well, sometimes I swear at them....I'm not sure what Dx that fits into!

Yep, I'm completely off my rocker!

And quite happy too....don't burst my bubble. LOL!!!!!

    XXOO!!
    Anne

    P.S. Love the pic... :)

  5. Aah you depressed? If you were depressed the disease condition may run away. You will likely make it confused. Though I have met young people who met online and when they met in person, they did not have much to say to each other. What do you consider a needy blog? I have my own idea of this. There are bloggers who scream "visit me, visit me!" "why have you not visited me?" and bloggers who insist on meeting fellow bloggers - 12 times a year. I think I met face to face the top of the "needy" chain in the past. Ugh! Not a good thing at all.

  6. Oh gee Anne, you too! You are going to give depression a very bad name if you were. What type of depressed person jumps with energy just by reading them? really! You are are a lot of "ic" but certainly not depressed. I am crazy about my sisterfirends and if someone told me to stop chatting with my favorite sisterfriends, I will be so sad. They add to my daily dose of inspiration and laughs.

  7. OMG!! Ces I love your baby picture. You are so cute and I can see the mind working 90 miles an hour even then.
I am depressed and and an aholic and there is no hope at all.
"Hi my name is Marie and there is no hope."
And if Anne is depressed, I am a goner.
    Love you cute one.
Ps. I think if you are depresed that you can find plenty to feed that anxiety on the internet, or... tv... or real life....

"The birds of despair fly over our heads daily, whether we choose to let them nest there is always up to us."

  8. I could never give Madi away Ces. Then I would really be depressed.
Madi has the same look in her eyes that you did.
    Am I in trouble?
You are in the giveaway though.
    Good luck.

  9. Did you say online dating!?! Does the Viking know about this?!

We both know already about my addiction problems - that would be books, art, art supplies, delicious food, dark chocolate, cashews ... do I need to go on?

Internet? Well maybe I'm addicted just a little - does obsessive checking of blog post comments count? Yikes! But depressed? I don't think so!! Especially when I get to look at adorable pictures like your baby photo!!!

Off to feed my nut addiction (did I say that out loud?!) ... Love, Silke

  10. AWWWWWWWWW!!! Look at those eyes! There is so much going on behind those eyes. Au contraire. I think I am much happier with da internet.

  11. Now I know why I'm screwed up, it's because of British scientists!

Ces, I smile every time I come here.
    You make me happy...
    thanks!

  12. I say: BULLSHIT! LOL! I'm addicted to reading, so I don't spend huge amounts of time online. Interesting, but I think not true.

  13. Ces! What a cutie-patootie you were! And yes, I spend far too much time reading and clicking and commenting and posting and looking. Eh. I am happy in my insanity. I meet interesting people and have interesting discussions about depression and a million other things. I think the internet and I are very best friends. We are going steady - hahahah! xoxox Pam

  14. Marie, Madi inspires me to organize the BBBC - Bold Bald Beautiful Babies Club

Ssssh Silke! HAHAHAHAHA! No not me but I know people who go online to look for mates. Is that good? I don't know? When they get married do they go online to chat from their desks?

A Bella, I wonder if I was bribed with some baby food or something to make me look that excited! I am so happy for Da Internet especially for you and my sisterfriends and I get to play school paper editor with blogging layouts.

Thank you Glen. I am glad I make you smile. You make me oh and ah with your photography!

Marion! Hahahaha! You know I am really not addicted to Da Internet. It's just a few friends I am interested in getting in touch with. I think blogging gets addictive especially if one has more than six blogs!!! I found a woman who had more than 12 blogs! I am addicted to sardines but it makes me throw up.

Pam you we can always visit each other and talk about depression! Really though there are depressed people and it's a very serious condition. It destroys lives.

  15. Who did this study? How many subjects? Who was in the control group?

This sounds awfully anecdotal to me and perhaps written by someone who is fearful of the Internet, or of change. Alternatively, like so many other things, it may be that the findings have been reported out of context.

Clearly there are people who spend the best part of their lives on line as a substitute for 'real' relationships, but that's extreme and I suspect such people in the minority.

I would not worry unduly about this. It may be that we bloggers have a problem - who doesn't have problems - and as with most problems someone else tries to quantify it. Number of hours spent on the Internet equals depression or some sch simplistic equation, but life's not like that. It's a tad more complex.

For some who practice their craft through the Internet, be it art, photography or writing, and others who might use the Internet commercially for the sale of goods and services, it may be that half their lives are so allocated. This does not signify psychopathology.

I'd take it all with a hefty grain of salt.

  16. Elisabeth, maybe they are the same scientists used by the UN Climate agency that skewed up data to support global warming!

Besides, everyone here is just so happy to admit to a problem. We are already declared members of AA - Artsandcraftsaholic Anonymous.

  17. no truth to depression but apparently you will loose your hair.

  22. Oh, Bull Feathers, says me. My Beloved is a physicist and has to work with his computer all the time, in and out of the Da Internet. I use it because I detest the phone and shopping and doing it at night from my bed gives me the peace and quiet I could never find at a store.
Besides I can shop in Europe if I want without leaving my bed.

"Da Inner Tubes"- private joke here at home - is just more convenient, for instance I use tons of Thymes candles. Only two stores in this great metropolis carry some but not all the flavors.
Guess what? So you see, my depression is weather related and if I am correct weather needs not to be plugged to anything to happen. How was your soup?

    ReplyDelete
  23. Ah! Allegra, but your use of Da Internet is utilitarian. There are people who are really adicted to it and they are constantly on message boards and porno sites. I do not really know any of my blog friends as addicted because they are so darn productive and creative if not occupied by daily living ativities and life in general but I would seriously start questioning someone's prerogatives when they have a dozen personal blogs! The soup was good. You know I love looking at yur dishes and your kitchen rocks!

  28. Aah I don't think that any of my friends are depressed, melancholic sometimes but not depressed. You are all too much to be contained. That intellect and creativity will manage to explode and then require sedation if at any time it will be constrained even just for a day. So we should all post our baby pictures, especially the baldy ones.
