Weren't the illustrations in old childrens books absolutely wonderful? So tempting one would wish to jump in and live within the pages?
I hope the rest has helped you feel better Ces; you've been in my thoughts and prayers to get back to your fire-ball self so that you can do what you want! (I'm going nuts, but trying to behave...HAHAHAHAHA!!!!!)
Take care and thank you for posting the delightful illustrations.....those indeed were what I grew up with, and I am sure influenced me in art somehow.
Hugs to drive away the bugs!!!

XXOO!!

Oh look! Mr. X is still waiting in the doorway. I love the detail you put in that newspaper.

These illustrations are darling and amazing and timeless. I don't think I would have moved all weekend, either. I think it is in illustrations like these where my love for pen and ink germinated.

I have a very similar book called The Children's Wonder Book and I'm sure the illustrations are very similar, must dig it out to see if it's the same illustrator. Beautiful books Ces. Always worth keeping and re-reading. Nice that you finally have some time to do so. I'm with Manon, you really should think about an illustrated book. Or even illustrating someone elses. Yours are indeed a joy to behold. (Bella, we had piggies in blankets for supper!)

Ces, it's very good - that you like to read books, it's very interesting! The most of people think that books it's just waste paper, but it's not so! Sometimes, when you don't have what to do, books it helped you! Today or tomorow I want to begin - to read the book written by Agata Cristi!!! You know this person? :)

Yes Anne, I agree. They were drawn by artists who either painted them or created woodcuts. What a time consuming process. Some of those who illustrated the children's books were painters like N.C. Wyeth. I was especially thrilled to see a lot of female illustrators included in the list of the Golden Age of Children's Book Illustrations. I am not sure of the book drawings influenced me but I was definitely inspired by the Flemish painters and how they painted scenes of daily life and ordinary people instead of royalty, I thought to myself, I would like to do that.

Thank you very much Manon for your support and confidence in me. Oh, the pressure. Actually I looked at my folios after you wrote your comment and concluded that except for the personal portraits, I was not pleased with my drawings includidng the abecedarian series, so I am back to zero. I need to start a collection. Maybe next year, I will start drawing with the thought that I may publish them but I am not making any promises. If I draw eleven more groves, that will be a great accomplishment for me. I am narrowing my field. I am glad you are painting.

Hi Sarah, my younger sister and I played with books because we did not have much toys so we used the pictures in counting games. Somewhere in there I remember Milo Winter, prolific illustrator.

Of course I know you will agree with Manon, Deborah. :) Oooh more pressure!

Renee, gunslinger? I don't get it. Thinking...thinking...no, still not getting it.

Thank you Bella. I enlarged the original image and it was interesting to read the bylines. I can see how they influenced you. Now bookssssss illustrated by Bella Sinclair......

Baino, thatnk you for the support. Yes, yes, I hear all of you. Thank you.

Yes, Jenea, if you like murder and mysteries. Some of her books have been made into movies. You are a very interesting young man :) I read Agatha Christie when I was a teenager. The BBC also produced series movies and shows of her novels.

Oooo, these are wonderful! With Daniel being a children's book illustrator, we have a huge collection of children's books and both just love reading them and looking at the gorgeous illustrations! I think that's what I like about these creative blogs (like yours) so much - they are so much like beautifully illustrated stories! Hope you are all well again!! Love, Silke

You just made it sound like you were folding babies and stuffing them in your drawers.

Bella Sinclair said...

Hahahaha! When you say 'stuff a sock in it,' you really mean it. G'night! Tsup!

Such beautiful illustrations Ces. I used to have Aubrey Beardsley's peacock lady poster on my bedroom wall. It was huge. I had a childrens book with dragons rather like those illustrated in your picture - I bet it was by the same artist.
